POLITICAL RELATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY AND DENMARK , 26.1.2016
The relations between Turkey and Denmark date back to the conclusion of the “Friendship and Trade Agreement” on 14 October 1756 between Sultan Osman the III and King Frederik the V. The first diplomatic representative of the Kingdom of Denmark assumed his duties in 1758 in Istanbul. Diplomatic relations between two countries was established by the Friendship Agreement between the Republic of Turkey and the Kingdom of Denmark signed on 26 January 1925.
The first Ambassador to Denmark was appointed to Copenhagen in 1960.
Relations and the cooperation between the two members of the NATO Alliance, Turkey and Denmark are further developing in every field. The Turkish community in Denmark is considered as an important element contributing to the cooperation between the two countries.
Political relations are conducted by the high level visits and the consultations and expert meetings between the competent institutions of the two countries. The last visits was paid by H.E. Villy Sovndal, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark on 28 May 2012 and by H.E. Helle Thorning Schmidt, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark on 14 May 2012 to Turkey and H.E. Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Turkey between 17-19 March 2014 to Denmark.
