Statement Made By The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Of Turkey , 12.12.2008
Our views on, and reaction to the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) Conclusions adopted on December 10, 2007 and endorsed on December 14, 2007 at the European Council, were expressed at the time in a statement of our Ministry.
It is clear that the Conclusions of December 2008 European Council released today, are essentially based on the GAERC 2008 and 2007 Conclusions.
The points emphasized in the Ministry’s statement of last year, are also valid for December 2008 GAERC and European Council Conclusions.
The process of accession negotiations, which started on October 3, 2005 in line with the decision of the European Council of December 17, 2004, is continuing, without interruption, towards our goal for full membership based on decisions taken by the EU by unanimity and the Negotiation Framework Document.
The EU reform process constitutes an important framework to raise our people’s living standards to the highest level which they deserve in all spheres of life and to further develop the rule of law, democracy and human rights. Our Government is determined to conduct the accession process and carry on with reforms.
A separate statement concerning other decisions taken at the European Council will be made later on.
