Press Release Regarding The World Refugee Day , 18.06.2010

In line with its historical tradition, The Republic of Turkey has always welcomed peoples fleeing oppression and persecution without any discrimination, and enabled them to live within its territory in freedom and without fear.

Turkey today continues to fulfill its commitments in pursuit of worthy ideals such as the protection of refugees, who are, for various reasons, forced to leave their countries of origin, and addressing the problems of refugees worldwide. Turkey appreciates the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which performs significant functions in this field.

Furthermore, Turkey does not remain indifferent to human tragedies witnessed in its region or beyond, and joins the call for help of the UNHCR for those who have been displaced as a result of war, civil war, natural disasters, and the like.

Necessary steps are taken to ensure that people who seek asylum in Turkey live in conditions suitable for human dignity during their stay. Turkey carries on activities with a view to improving its infrastructure, and making necessary adjustments and amendments to its national legislation.

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, Turkey reiterates its determination to supporting those who escape oppression and persecution.
